Starring Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, Marlon Wayans.
Based on the novel by Hubert Selby Jr., adapted by Selby and Aronofsky.
First watched this with a friend and we both had the same impression:
We were riveted to our seats, totally fascinated and amazed, but when it was
over we said we would probably never want to watch it again (though I since
have). It gets disturbing! This is Aronofsky's second film, following
Pi. That film had kind of an edgy, panicked feel to it and this one
takes that to an extreme. Ellen Burstin has a great part. There is a
refrigerator that will make you jump out of your seat. This is about
addiction and could be seen as a strong anti-drug movie. If you have thought
about dabbling with heroin, you may change your mind. Totally awesome and
very interesting film but probably not really a pleasant experience. Highly
recommended, though, as are all Aronofsky films.

A horror spoof musical with a very colorful cast, including a transvestite
mad scientist vampire, Dr. Frank N. Furter (Tim Curry),
his hunch-backed butler, Riff-Raff (Richard O'Brien, songwriter and one
of the screenplay writers), Riff-Raff's sister Magenta (Patricia Quinn),
the stranded couple, Brad and Janet (Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon),
the monster (Peter Hinwood), Dr. Scott (Jonathan Adams), Columbia
(Little Nell) and Eddie (Meatloaf).
The ultimate cult film, Rocky Horror has played at midnight on
weekends for over 30 years in theaters all over the world with
audiences performing an elaborate participation ritual including dressing
up as film characters, singing along with songs, dancing in the aisles
or even on stage, reciting dialog in unison with the film, inserting
additional shouted dialog, and throwing things (such as rice
during wedding scene). I think I saw it about seven times in the
theater long ago. I didn't dress up or anything but it was very fun
to be around the whole spectacle. I remember someone commenting that
they thought the film was very colorful. It is definitley quite
visually interesting throughout, with lots of vivid color.

Third film from Wes Anderson, following Bottle Rocket and
Rushmore. Comedy-drama co-written by Anderson and Owen Wilson,
starring Gene Hackman, Bill Murray, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anjelica Huston,
Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Ben Stiller, Danny Glover, Kumar Pallana, Seymour
Cassel. Narrated by Alec Baldwin. Music by Mark Mothersbaugh.
I did not like this or any Wes Anderson films after seeing his first 4 or 5.
Later I rewatched Bottle Rocket and liked it alot and have been
revisiting Anderson's films. He does have a distinctive style that some
people don't like. I find that I am less "judgemental" as I get more into
watching movies. I enjoyed this alot on rewatching. Wes Anderson is
certainly a major voice in modern cinema and this is one of his greatest
films. DVD includes generous extra features.

Wikipedia - Multiple Chemical Sensitivity: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_chemical_sensitivity
Stars Julianne Moore as a housewife suffering from exposure to environmental
chemicals (MCS - multiple chemical sensitivity). Well-reviewed, the Village
Voice calls it "the best film of the 90's". DVD has been out of print for
awhile and is hard to find. (The 19 copies listed on Amazon on 10/13/12
range from $37 to $300). This is one of Moore's first lead roles and one of
her best performances, she is featured pretty much nonstop in every scene.
The film is complex with much to think about. It can be seen as horror, as
dark comedy, as social commentary, perhaps even educational. I don't think
the film steers you towards any particular interpretation. Perhaps her
illness is very real, perhaps it is psychosomatic. Today, although the
condition is more widely recognized, it is still controversial and not
completely accepted by official mainstream medical authority. An interesting
aspect of the film is the retreat center that she winds up at, which turns
out to be kind of a new-age self-help cult run by an apparent charlatan, who
teaches both that "the world out there is toxic" and that "you caused your
own sickness". The ending is ambiguous. Many people will find this slow and
boring. I would agree with the critics who consider it a masterpiece, and I
recommend it most highly. It would be great if Criterion would reissue
this. Check out the essay by Julie Grossman (linked above) for a thorough,
indepth analysis.

quotes from critics: "Australian cinema is never going to be the same."
"a remarkable achievement in cinema and steps beyond what most filmmakers

Kubrick's classic horror masterpiece. Based on Stephen King's book of the
same name. Starring Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall. Here we learn that
murder spelled backwards is red rum, and that all work and no play makes
Jack a dull boy. Bloody horror films are not my thing, but of course
anything by Kubrick is essential and awesome. Have seen several times.
This is a really intense trip with some really scary moments.

Linklater's first film. (not to be confused with Slackers).
I'll steal this review by Phil Bacharach from OKC's Gazette 10/20/04:
"In 1991, a budding filmmaker named Richard Linklater got a bunch of Austin,
Texas pals together to make "Slacker", a 16mm celebration of their
hometown's eccentric charms. Costing a meager $23,000, the movie
encapsulated a generation's aimlessness and provided a label for all
over-educated roustabouts with an aversion to work and an affinity for
flannel. "Slacker" is finally on DVD, and your reaction to it largely
depends on your indulgence for the verbose. There are only vignettes, as
Linklater's camera meanders through an assemblage of oddballs, weirdoes,
and cranks who love to talk about anything: the nostalgia of anarchy, the
Smurfs as Krishna propaganda, Madonna pap smears, you name it. The
conversations are funny, thought-provoking, poignant, and yes, ultimately
exhausting. The Criterion Collection works its magic in this terrific 2-disc
package that includes multiple commentaries, audition videos and some
earlier Linklater films that probably didn't need to see the light of day.
No matter. "Slacker" remains an offbeat, if uneven, cultural touchstone for
the early Nineties."

Starring Jeff Daniels, Melanie Griffith, Ray Liotta (all three in
stand-out performances). Very interesting film. Starts out fun and wild,
transitions with an interlude at the highschool reunion, then gets
scary when Liotta appears. Excellent soundtrack. And for an extra-special
bonus, the band at the highschool reunion (the Willies) is actually the
Feelies. Good to see the Criterion release, but it doesn't get the usual
treatment - basically just an improved digital transfer, no extras besides
commentary by Demme. Recommended, a top favorite.

Fourth film from Sofia Coppola, following Marie Antoinette, followed
by The Bling Ring. Stars Stephen Dorff as a jaded Hollywood star and
Elle Fanning as his 11-year-old daughter. Playboy playmates and twin sisters
Kristina and Karissa Shannon appear as strippers who make house calls to
entertain Dorff's character with pole-dancing routines. Expores the nature
of celebrity, Hollywood ennui and the father-daughter relationship.

Second film from Richard Kelly, following Donnie Darko.
Apocalyptic sci-fi action comedy, and a bit of a musical. Satirical
commentary on post-911 Homeland Security politics and celebrity-obsessed
infotainment culture. Probably widely misunderstood, got bad reviews and
was a total box-office failure. Some say it makes more sense if you have
read the graphic novel first (which is included on the BluRay edition).
I probably wouldn't agree with that, though I have not seen the graphic
novel. I found this to be interesting, intense, funny, and trippy.

Tumblr Essay by Ladonna Pietra: theprincessesandthepanopticon.tumblr.com/
Interview with Director at Stereogum: stereogum.com/1298072/
I saw this in the theater 04/03/13. Amazing, stunning, awesome. I read
quite a bit about this before I saw it. I definitely recommend reading about
this film, but you may want to see it first, and just let it speak for
itself. Here is a quote from Michael Glover Smith
from a comment under his excellent review: "Even though there are aspects of
the film I don't like, as I point out in my review, the aspects of it that
are refreshingly, daringly original make nearly every other American film of
recent memory seem so, so stale." Korine says it is a "pop poem".
Update: I watched this again when the DVD came out (07/13) and again in
November 2013 - still holds up for me as one of the most amazing films I
have seen. Also have continued to read about it (Ladonna Pietra's Tumblr
essay is very interesting).

Super-cool - one of my top favorites - have watched many times.
Anti-drug tale about meth. Here is a quote from the DVD box by Stephen
Holden of the New York Times: "A tour de force of grunge atmosphere...a
swaggering journey into hell that conveys a chortling amusement...with a
hip gallows humor." Watch the first twelve minutes before the credits and
you should be hooked (or not, in which case you won't like it). Beware of
the censored R-Rated version, you want the Unrated version, which
says "Uncensored Director's Cut" right on the front of the box.
(A detailed comparison of the R-Rated and Unrated versions is here:

Excellent soundtrack music, including lots of original songs by Billy
Corgan (of the Smashing Pumpkins). He has a cameo near the end as
the doctor. Also a cameo by Rob Halford (of Judas Priest). A fast-paced
visual feast - Akerlund is a Swedish director who has done a lot of music
videos. Includes some cool animation scenes. Not for everyone, but you're
cool - so check it out.

Dree Hemingway, Besedka Johnson. Fourth film from Sean Baker. Exceptionally
excellent, definitely one of the best films I saw in 2013. The DVD is loaded
with extra features. Dree is the daughter of Mariel Hemingway (and Ernest
Hemingway's great-granddaughter). She has been a model and studied ballet
and has had some small film roles. This is her first starring role and
announces her presence quite solidly. Besedka Johnson was discovered (at age
85) while working out at a gym by the film's executive producer. She had
wanted to be an actress since she was 15. This is her first and only film,
she passed away at the age of 87 on April 4, 2013.

Al Franken stars as Stuart Smalley, a character he developed on Saturday

a Chicago cable TV show called Daily Affirmations with Stuart Smalley. His
show is cancelled and he is called home to Minneapolis when an aunt passes
away, which puts him in the middle of his crazy disfunctional family.
This mainstream Hollywood production was box-office failure and has mainly
bad reviews, but actually has a lot of humor relating to crazy families,
self-help programs, addiction, etc. Siskel and Ebert both gave it a thumbs
up. I have watched it several times and it still makes me laugh.

A couple of milk truck drivers come to the aid of Tampopo, a woman

Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon play fictionalized versions of themselves
travelling together on a tour of restaurants in Northern England. This is
edited from a TV series of the same name, and is a continuation of the
2006 film Tristam Shandy - A Cock and Bull Story. You could see it
as a food movie, but it is really more of a philosophical comedy. Kind of
looking at two different attitudinal approaches to life.

Unique film. I guess we would say its a comedy, in the bizarre style of
David Byrne, or maybe a mockumentary, hosted by Byrne, or maybe its a
musical, which features songs performed by the Talking Heads with various
guest singers. Set in the fictional small town of Virgil, Texas. Lots of odd
characters and odd scenes. Quirky fun. Just get into the strangeness, the
feeling, the images, the music, and don't try to figure anything out ("Stop
Making Sense"). Cast includes Spalding Gray, John Goodman, Pops Staples.

Final film from master Hungarian filmmaker Bela Tarr, who says the film is
about "the heaviness of human existence." Long, slow, bleak, in black and
white, very little dialog - this is not an easy film to watch. I made it

the howling of the wind, the visitor, the horse. It will make an impression

Second film from self-taught filmmaker and former engineer Shane Carruth,
who wrote, produced, directed, shot, edited, scored, stars in, and is
distributing this amazing and ambitious film. This follows Primer, his
legendary 2004 super-low-budget sci-fi film. This is also a tricky sci-fi,
which involves a parasitic worm, and pigs. Definitely an interesting and
well-made film. I'm not sure I can say I understood a lot of it. And not
sure that that matters. I think a lot of people will be confused enough by
this to not enjoy it, while others may either like to be confused or maybe
won't find it so confusing. Or maybe you're not supposed to "understand" it.

Wow! This is one powerful film. A classic Australian masterpiece, "lost" for
many years until it was restored in 2009. I found out about this shortly
before the 2013 DVD release (thanks E.W.) and got ahold of it as soon as I
could. Having recently been intrigued by a lot of Australian films
(including Bad Boy Bubby, Samson and Delilah,
The Snowtown Murders), I had high expectations for this one and
was not disappointed. Totally amazing all the way through. A wild tale
of a schoolteacher in rural Australia who gets stuck in a town in the
Outback (Bundanyabba, or "the Yabba") on his way back to Sydney for the
holidays. You have never seen this much beer consumed in a film (or in
real life). Many Australians were offended by this depiction when the
film came out. And many people have walked out of this film during the
kangaroo hunting scene, which is real and quite bloody (though they filmed
hunters rather than killing kangaroos just for the film). This will be quite
disturbing for many people, but a powerful and unforgettable experience if
you can handle it. Pretty much every scene is a look into a world you
have never seen. Including a look at "the biggest game of 2-up in Australia".
Starring Gary Bond, Donald Pleasence, Chips Rafferty. DVD is loaded with
special features. Highly recommended.

Now this is one original film. Uses a type of animation (rotoscope)
that is drawn on top of regular film. The main character, Wiley Wiggins, is
stuck in a dream, which consists of a series of encounters with various
characters, who all have a lot to say. Lots of very interesting ideas
are presented. A lot of it has to do with
dreams and the concept of "lucid dreaming" (being conscious in your dreams).
Timothy Speed Levitch gets a few minutes (see "The Cruise" on my
Documentary page). The guy in the car with the
speakers on top is Alex Jones, who has become the king of conspiracy
theorists.
I later found the interesting documentary I Am A Sex Addict and
realized that the director, Caveh, is featured in Waking Life.
This is definitely one of the most interesting films ever. Have
watched many times. Highly recommended.

Strikingly intense, very compelling, stylish Australian drama set in a
private high school (no adults are seen in the film). Explores issues of
bullying, rape, revenge, Internet technology, robots, social media.
Stars Adelaide Clemens, Alex Russell, Oliver Ackland. This film
has mixed reviews and may be flawed but definitely shows that first-time
director Ben C. Lucas has some major talent. I thought it sounded
interesting and I like Adelaide Clemens (saw her in generation Um..),
and when I saw that it was an Australian film, I knew I would have to give
it a chance. I don't think I have ever been disappointed by an Australian
film, and this was no exception. (Released in Australia in 2010, American
DVD released in 2013).

Tilda Swinton (as a mother with an evil son), John C. Reilly (her husband),
Ezra Miller (the son). Based on the novel of the same name by Lionel Shriver.
Some may see this as an especially good thriller or even almost a horror
film, but it may also be seen as a deep exploration of issues relating to
motherhood, parenting, feminism, nature vs. nurture, etc. Sue Thorton's
essay (linked above) gets into a lot of that. This is a very powerful and
engrossing film. Highly recommended. Scottish director Lynne Ramsay
